Bad Breath

Bad breath - Oral hygiene is of the utmost importance to keep this orifice healthy and clean. Bad breath can be very embarrassing for the sufferer but more off putting for the person standing before them. Smelly breath is seen as repulsive and more to the point - the person with the stinking mouth is seen as dirty. However this is not the case. People can brush their teeth three times a day and still emit a pong every time they open their mouth.

Here are some facts to make you aware of how your breath can turn into a foul smelling cesspit.

Most cases i.e. (about 90%), of bad breath comes from the mouth itself, this is in despite. of public opinion that begs to differ that bad breath comes from the stomach. Bad breath rarely comes from this part of the body.

It’s funny how a person can smell another’s bad breath but fail to realize and acknowledge that they too have a problem with their own smelly orifice.

In the mouth the most common source of bad breath is the very back of the tongue where food particles, dead cells and postnasal drip normally accumulates, is the breakdown of the proteins by the resident bacteria which causes foul smells and odours. A bacterium is mainly one of the true causes behind mouth and gum disease. With bad breath bacteria breaks down the protein between the teeth. The dangers of this is, the gases and other molecules that the bacteria produce are toxic and can harm the gums. Gum disease can lead to the teeth (molars) loosening and falling out. Toothache can be very painful - so remember to stop the build up of plaque by brushing and flossing the teeth regular.

The inside of the mouth is not an area that is regularly visible to the eyes of others but can still be quite troubling when it does come into view displaying decayed rotting teeth.

Bad breath usually increases when the mouth is dry. You should try chewing sugarless gum for five minutes at a time. It may not be the cure but is certainly a great way to help. A question raised quite often is, do mouth washes/rinses work, well to be honest yes for periods of time. Remember what works for one may not for another – depending on the severity and the cause behind why you suffer from bad breath. Try gargling before retiring to bed for best results. Alcohol-free mouth rinses are usually recommended. If you are not sure of whether you have bad breath or not, ask a friend or member of the family to be honest with you. Ask them to come up close if they dare.

Toddlers as young as two or three years old can suffer from bad breath too. This can happen because of postnasal drip, dental plaque and transient throat infections. However, if they suddenly develop a strong smelly odour that seems to come from all over their body, then this can instigate some other problem. It is wise to talk to your doctor for fear the infant may have blocked their nostril with an alien item. If dental treatment is on the cards and you have concerns before dental treatment is performed in the surgery or hospital then speak with your dentist or dental surgeon beforehand.
