Underarm Sweat
Excessive armpit sweating in medical terms is called Axillary hyperhidrosis, thankfully it stays that way because can you see yourself saying on hot day to a friend that you are Axillary hyperhidrosis from under the arms.
Every person sweats at some time from under the armpit, but about 1% of the population who suffer from axillary hyperhidrosis will experience the discomfort of extreme loss of moisture, i.e. dripping sweat. Sadly to say for those who perspire excessively from under the armpit will find deodorants and odour medication are useless in stemming the sweat flow and stench (stink pong) Using anti-perspirant sprays or roll ons can be an expensive curing process because they are normally rejected by the body from doing the job that they are scientifically designed for. At times it is just not the armpits that are affected so are the hands (palmar hyperhidrosis)
Perspiration (sweat) is perfectly normal and a necessary function for our body as it helps regulate the temperature of the body – cooling it down as well as excreting waste products. If you are not familiar with sweating patterns then another form of axillary hyperhidrosis is bromhidrosis. Bromhidrosis is a certain bacteria (cornebacteria) that rests on the skin which converts the sweat to a malodorus (foul smelling) end product. This can be embarrassing for the sufferer where in some cases the sufferer takes on a reclusive approach to situations that involve meeting people and decide to stay at home to avoid confrontations where their sweat bouts are noticeable.
There are two basic sorts of glands in the axillary area, the eccrine and apocrine glands. The eccrine are responsible for the watery production and the apocrine glands secrete a protein like substance. Severe sweating under the armpits normally happens at puberty. If control is lost in easing sweat loss, a sufferer may find they have to change their clothes up to three times a day or more depending on the amount of sweat outbursts.. Embarrassment may even have the patient avoiding certain colours they wear so as not to attract attention to the offending area.
The patho-physiology of excessive armpit sweating is somewhat complicated but basically it represents over stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system. Clinical studies show that some of the reasons behind the cause of heavy sweating can be directed towards certain foods, stress, anxiety and even emotional stimuli as well as upsets which can add to their problem making their condition worse. If your problem is giving you reason for concern then speak to your doctor who may prescribe medication or give advice on what is the best way to help calm and sedate the symptoms of Axillary hyperhidrosis. |
